This week on the Journal we’re in Caulfield, the charming Melbourne suburb interior designer, Tali Roth, her husband, Marcus and three children, Phoenix (9), Romeo (5) and Ruby (2) call home. Behind her front door we are greeted with a masterful combination of opulent layers, jewel tones and a confidence with colour that comes with years of experience, decorating homes across Australia and the US, under her namesake studio Tali Roth Designs. Crediting Melbourne’s mid century architecture, it’s coffee, and her fellow design community as unwavering companions in this cosmopolitan city, join us in exploring every delightful corner of Tali’s newly renovated home as she shares the style lessons she’s learnt along the way.

Tali's cosy living space is adorned with our Alpaca Throw in Soft Pink.

“We bought the home in 2019 whilst still living in the States. It was pretty untouched and had been rented out to larger groups for many years so it definitely needed love. We started the renovation in early 2022 and moved in at the beginning of 2023. I love the main living space - it's so bright, it's so beautiful! I love the basement and how many uses it provides us with! I love it all!

“My bedroom is serene and soft and warm. It has an old world feel to it because of the mix of vintage; bedside tables, chandelier and sconces and new; my bed, bedding and desk. I love grabbing my computer and working in my bed. I also love snuggling with the 2 year old after a shower or late night chats with the husband as he falls asleep listening to me unload!”

“(My kids rooms) are super small spaces and we didn't have a heap of options with the layout because of that. There are nice sized closets and built-in display shelving in both bedrooms in an original 60’s veneer. I decided to have the bedrooms speak to each other and go with a dark colour in both spaces - olive for Romeo and navy for Phoenix.

“I wanted to ensure it felt fun and layered which is where the custom sofa beds came in with three contrasting fabrics that added nice texture and whimsy to the space. In both bedrooms I leant into the mid century vibes but in a contemporary and functional way!

I have honed my style through the many spaces I have lived in. It has helped me learn what I like and what I don't…there is no better way to learn than to actually experience things yourself. I have learnt that white furniture doesn't stay white and feel grubby over time. I have learnt that fabric needs to be washable to stain proof with a young family.

I have learnt that you must mix old and new, hard and soft, bold and gentle in each space to achieve true harmony and balance. I have also learned that popular pieces become tired in the eyes of a designer so stick to classic!”

“I am really proud of my Mitzi lighting ranges in the US and I love seeing people using them in reality. I am also really super proud of the Grace Brighton retail store I did in 2022. It's so thoughtful and beautiful. I also am super proud of Victoria House. Honestly though - I am mostly proud of the relationships I build with clients.

“My favourite thing about Melbourne is the coffee, my extended family and the design community which has a plethora of inspiration.

“We love Elwood farmers market and try to go there with the kids as often as we can. We love a nice brunch out with the family on the weekends and our favourite spot is Galleon in St Kilda.

The rest of the time we hang out in parks around the south east… Harleston Park in Elsternwick is a favourite. In this phase of life I am in - most activities happen with our kids in tow… they always enjoy coming to the Melbourne Art Fair!

“Coming up I’m working on some amazing houses outside of NYC… and I have some awesome product collaborations in the pipeline!”
