Artist Retreats: From the Beach to Bordeaux
This week we revisit four artist retreats — from Victoria’s surf coast to the wine country of France, to see how these talented Journal subjects live, work, and create. Join us as we stop by Cat Yenn’s bright & beautiful Sydney apartment, followed by artist couple Matthew Wright & Emma Lindegaard’s breezy Perth pad. A visit to the seaside delivers Amy Leeworthy’s ceramics studio, before we get swept up in the romance of Bordeaux, and the creative sanctuary of Anaïs Vindel & Maxence Oddone. Prepare to be inspired as we visit these creators whose maker’s mark can be seen in every corner of the home.

Patience and precision underpin artist & designer, Cat Yenn’s body of work. Her geometric pieces deliberately avoid any digital assistance, instead Cat conceptualises and paints every work by hand. Like her creations, the artist’s Rosebery apartment in Sydney’s south is a playful experiment in colour, pattern & space.

Emma Lindegaard & Matt Wright seem to have perfected the art of balance both in life, and their Fremantle home. Time spent in nature; the cool of the ocean & the calm of the garden is given the same reverence as their burgeoning careers as tactile artists - a ceramicist & painter respectively. Away from their practice, the couple can just as happily be found at popular Freo haunts, or the confines of their art-laden Hamilton Hill cottage.

We meet talented ceramicist Amy Leeworthy at her home by the sea in Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. Along with her two children Ellis and Delilah, Amy has embraced the beauty and adventure of living so close to nature. We had the pleasure of speaking to Amy about the many beautiful pieces of art and objects that adorn her space, the evolution of her practice, and why she’s quite simply “smitten with clay”.

Finally, we're transported to wine (and art) country, Bordeaux, France to the home of artists Anaïs Vindel & Maxence Oddone. Together, the pair have created a sanctuary for creativity to roam free, Dyplo House: a space that is part gallery, part studio, part home. During our visit, among their vintage and flea market finds, their retreat is furnished with the creations of friend & sculptor Caroline Desile, a reflection of what Dyplo House set out to be — a hub for art and daily life to intertwine.
