This week we look back at some of our favourite homes built close to nature and far away from the bustle of modern life. From an interior designer’s home on one of Australia’s most tightly held islands to a musician’s colourful off-the-grid shack; these homes are filled with simple pleasures and in our opinion, make the perfect case for a few slow days out of the city.
1. A Weekend at Pearl Beach with Livio Tobler
We tagged along for a short stay at Pearl Beach with furniture designer Livio Tobler, his partner artist Poppy Kural and their beautiful daughter Etta. Pearl Beach is a small seaside town an hour and a half out of Sydney but a world away from the busyness of city life. The couple spend a lot of time here in Poppy’s family's beach house; a wonderfully nostalgic shack filled with warmth and a long history of family gatherings and milestone moments. We spoke with Livio about his design practice, creative process and what he enjoys most about spending time at this special seaside locale.
2. An Artist’s Cosy Seaside Home
We met artist Natalie Bessell at her sunny home in Saint Andrews Beach on the Mornington Peninsula. Natalie’s work uses paint, paper, wood, and clay to explore our relationship with the natural world, with this in mind, it’s no surprise that she was attracted to the laid back, beachy lifestyle in Melbourne’s southeast. We chatted to Natalie about her progression as an artist and the evolution of her work as well as her love of icy winter dips and spending time in nature.
3. Musician Mylee Grace’s Happy Sun House
Listening to musician Mylee Grace’s album ‘Whiplash in the Moshpit’, one can’t help but imagine the talented entertainer writing it in nature, near the beach. It’s a dreamy, nostalgic record (don’t be fooled by the name!) that immediately transports you somewhere warm and sunny. For Mylee, this place exists and it has a name - Happy Sun House - a colourful, off-the-grid shack perched on top of a hill on Bundjalung Country in the Northern Rivers. We visited Mylee to speak about the time she spends at this special property, how it informs her creative practice and the many special objects that have come to live under its roof.
4. A Space for Creativity with Interior Designer Jessica d’Abadie
We pay a visit to the lovely Jessica d’Abadie, a longtime IN BED collaborator and co-founder of design studio Triibe. While working on an array of residential projects over the past 12-months, Jessica has also been busy realising a project of her own: the renovation of her beautiful studio in Mullumbimby. We spoke to Jessica about taking time to experiment with the space, the evolution of Triibe’s business and what she’s looking forward to for the rest of the year.
5. At Home on Lord Howe Island with Interior Designer Chloë McCarthy
One of our most read features was a visit to the beautiful home of interior designer Chloë McCarthy that she shares with her partner Jesse, son Max (4) and daughter Margaux (6-months) on Lord Howe Island. We spoke to Chloë about the nuances of island life, her creative process and unique perspective on Australian design. A special thank you to photographer Chelsea Holden who captured the lifestyle Chloë shares with her family and friends on Lorde Howe so beautifully for this piece.
