A Case for Colour: 5 Bright & Beautiful Homes

This week on the Journal we revisit a collection of homes that give us cause for celebration, each one brimming with vibrant personality. We stop by Julia & Kevin’s NYC loft where almost every wall is painted a different hue, and closer to home, pay a visit to the jewel toned abode of interior designer Tali Roth. Up in the Northern Rivers, both Tess Guinery & Holly McCauley’s art collections paint their walls in a riot of expression, while clusters of books function both as inspiration and decoration. Our last stop is LA-based furniture designer Shin Okuda who happens to have one of the best bathrooms we’ve seen. Enjoy!

Tali Roth, Melbourne

Behind Tali Roth’s front door we are greeted with a masterful combination of opulent layers, jewel tones and a confidence with colour that comes with years of experience, decorating homes across Australia and the US, under her namesake studio Tali Roth Designs.

Tess Guinery, Murwillumbah

Tess Guinery’s life is one of whimsy. Captured here under the haze of film, we were lucky enough to catch a glimmer of the world she shares with love-of-her-life Caleb, three daughters, goldfish & two bunnies, Sunrise and Sugar & Sherbert. If her words read like poetry, it’s because they are - Tess has published two anthologies and a picture book - brought to life through technicolor paintings that act as a canvas for her expressions.

Shin Okuda, Los Angeles

Furniture designer Shin Okuda shares a similar approach to work as he does curating his family's El Sereno home - slowly, sustainably and with unique glimmers of personality; children’s artwork, miniatures, and wisps of fabric that soften windows, lighting, even their television screen. The professional realisation of this approach is Waka Waka, a Los Angeles based studio that has produced wood furniture & functional objects, handcrafted by Shin since 2009.

Holly McCauley, Byron Hinterland

We visited Yeah, Nice Gallery co-owner & graphic designer Holly McCauley at her cottage in the Byron Hinterland. The creative jack-of-all-trades has lived in the airy timber abode with her partner Nich, and daughters Della & Posey for the past year. Tempted by the idea of more space & gumtrees galore, the family were drawn to the town of Rosebank, wedged between Byron & Lismore. This week we spoke to Holly about working in the arts & the magic of the Northern Rivers.

Julia Eshaghpour & Kevin Hollidge, New York

Living in a New York loft is something most of us can only dream of. Sharing the building with a couple who’ve been there since the 70’s only fuels the fantasy. This is where we're fortunate enough to find Julia Eshaghpour and Kevin Hollidge, on the lively border of Chinatown and the Lower East Side in Manhattan. The pair share their home, multidisciplinary art & design practice Sunfish, and two cats, Quique and Lalo.
