On the Road: Long Weekend Destinations
Main image of Portum, Byron Bay by Kate Holmes
Ahead of the Easter long weekend, IN BED map out our most memorable road trip destinations, accessible from some of Australia’s capital cities. With no need to board a plane, simply park up, check in and take a deep exhale…
Brisbane — Byron Bay | Check in: Portum
Slow mornings in one of Portum’s four luxurious bedrooms - finished in our much-loved colour combination: Chestnut & Cocoa. Images by Andy Macpherson.
With sweeping ocean vistas, Portum Byron Bay takes its name from the Latin word meaning ‘a shelter serving as a place of safety or sanctuary’. We instantly connected with the ethos of this secluded home away from home, as sanctuary is just what you’ll find here; light-filled, thoughtfully designed spaces, curated for reconnecting with friends, family & nature.
Canberra — Merimbula | Check in: Hillcrest Merimbula
When you’re ready to turn in for the night, cosy up to IN BED’s heavy linen at this nostalgic seaside resort. Images by Brigette Clark.
Just three hours from the capital, Hillcrest Merimbula, a reimagined 1970s beachside motel is the perfect out-of-office destination. Hillcrest’s retro charm doesn’t stop at the rooms - come daybreak opt for a hit of tennis on the grounds or a continental breakfast in the dining room. Grounded in nature, Merimbula is home to Short Point, where you might catch sight of a whale or two and no doubt, Australia’s shimmering Sapphire coastline.

Sydney — Mittagong | Check in: Mittagong Hotel
Breathing new life into a public house dating back to 1890, the Mittagong Hotel carves a special place in this charming Southern Highlands town. Capturing all that we love about a country retreat; cosy furnishings and an excellent bar menu, the rooms are also worth a look, where layers of texture and warmth abound. When it’s time to venture, explore wineries and antique shops - or the quaint town centre, right on the hotel’s doorstep.

Melbourne | Check in: HV.Hotel by Hip V Hype
Opting for an IN BED palette of Dove Grey, Stone & Kohl, HV.Hotel’s earthy interiors feel surprisingly at home at this inner city locale. Images by Kate Shanasy.
Melbourne is a city where it pays to be local, so why not stay home? A place for the sustainably minded, design-conscious traveller, the HV.Hotel is comfortably housed in the award-winning Ferrars & York building alongside neighbouring South Melbourne Markets, brimming with fresh produce, baked goods and Market Lane coffee.
Hobart — Satellite Island | Check in: Satellite Island
A cosy bed dressed in IN BED Grey & White Stripe 100% Linen Duvet Cover. Images by Luisa Brimble.
A private island is just the beginning of this Tasmanian adventure; which might see you cooking fresh fish over an open fire, or shucking wild oysters straight from the sea - a true return to life’s simple pleasures. Framed by the D'Entrecasteaux Channel, Satellite Island has only recently been open to the public, and as such is an unspoilt paradise - a combination of native bush, sheer cliffs, rocky beaches and coves to bask in the afternoon sunlight. Lodgings include a luxury bell tent, the Summerhouse and the Boathouse which sits atop the shore. Inside, a palette of grey, navy & white linen are made for this coastal retreat (and for lazy mornings in bed).
