The Force of Nature
From urban patches to bucolic fields, join us in reflecting on the green spaces we’ve admired on the Journal. We read about the deep connection our subjects have to the outdoors, whether a community garden in London or a tropical paradise in the Northern Territory of Australia. These are the stories to share with the green thumb in your life…
Luke Mortimer, Chewton
Multi-faceted creative Luke Mortimer built his abode on Dja Dja Wurrung Country in the Victorian Goldfields with his late partner, artist Steve Burley. Originally designed as an escape from Melbourne, as the gardens grew, so did his longing to spend more time there - eventually becoming a full-time Chewton resident in 2023. The change, in his words ‘has been the perfect recipe for healing’.
Nina Fitzgerald, Darwin
Creative Director, Nina Fitzgerald has devoted her career to emerging artists with Laundry Gallery, a creative hub located on Larrakia Land. The gallery has taken shape in 70’s era laundromat, acting as the backdrop for exhibitions, workshops & events and a metaphor for the new life Nina has given to First Nations stories. Her time away from the gallery is spent in her childhood home, a veritable tree-house with a kidney pool framed by lush palms.
Nicholas Bijan Pourfard, San Diego
Residing in Escondido, Nicholas Bijan Pourfard has a rhythmic relationship with his exotic garden, tending to it every morning and evening around his work as a designer. The house itself was imagined by the late modernist architect & industrial designer, Walter S. White and just like its surroundings, Nicholas has taken great care in continuing his legacy.
Kirsty Davey, Maldon
Stylist Kirsty Davey’s lodgings are in a former caretaker’s cottage for the local goldmine, dating back to1860. Since moving in, Kirsty and her family have taken their time carefully restoring this historical Maldon site. Outside is another gleaming treasure; tangling ivy, pretty shrubs and ancient towering trees border the charming cottage, an ode to her childhood spent in the great outdoors.
Gosia Piatek, London
Kowtow founder Gosia Piatek’s North London home is framed by a garden that provides her family with a steady supply of home grown flowers and organic produce. Beyond this is two acres of community land shared with her neighbours where they host wholesome traditions like an egg hunt, camp out, pumpkin carving and Christmas carols.
Samantha McIntyre, Brunswick
And finally, an atypical take on the garden is artist Samantha McIntyre’s rooftop oasis - home to two bee hives, an outdoor bath, and a view of Melbourne’s sprawling skyline. The limitations of urban living have not stopped her from creating a sanctuary, that is in every sense of the saying: a breath of fresh air.
