The Most Read Home Visits of 2024
Every year on the IN BED Journal we are welcomed with open arms into awe-inspiring homes the world over. As we look back on the year that was, we revisit the homes that made a mark on the minds (and hearts) of our loyal readers. From Noosa to NYC, discover for yourself why these homes were a stand out.
Melbourne: Ben Mooney
Living above his shop, Ma House founder Ben Mooney blurs the lines between work and life to great effect. The Victorian relic is a two-level treasure trove of wares Ben has procured both on wild adventures and Marketplace scrolls. Just like Ma House Supply Store, Ben is a staple of the Johnston-Smith St intersect in Melbourne's Collingwood, often opening his upstairs quarters to fellow creatives for events & photoshoots.
Northern Rivers: Tess Guinery
Tess Guinery’s life is one of whimsy. Captured here under the haze of film, we were lucky enough to catch a glimmer of the world she shares with love-of-her-life Caleb, three daughters, goldfish & two bunnies, Sunrise and Sugar & Sherbert. If her words read like poetry, it’s because they are - Tess has published two anthologies and a picture book - brought to life through technicolor paintings that act as a canvas for her expressions. Having lived in locations far and wide, for now her home and studio (a self described rabbit warren) lies in the idiosyncratic town of Murwillumbah, a place that has afforded, in her own words ‘a season of rest and restoration’.
Melbourne: Samantha McIntyre
Through an inconspicuous doorway in Fitzroy, Melbourne (Naarm), up dozens of dizzying stairs sits Samantha McIntyre’s urban sanctuary. The beekeeper, artist & ceramicist aka The Soda Fountain has made herself at home in this lofty space, with every nook & cranny filled with creations made by her own hand, and by her talented bevy of friends. You could spend all afternoon here with her two cats, 6 fish and bees in the thousands, rifling through her creative curios, and that's just what we did – captured by dear friend, Phillip Huynh – we chatted about Sam’s work, her inner city lifestyle, and who she wants to be when she grows up.
Perth: Emma Lindegaard & Matt Wright
Emma & Matt seem to have perfected the art of balance both in life, and their Fremantle home. Time spent in nature; the cool of the ocean & the calm of the garden is given the same reverence as their burgeoning careers as tactile artists - a ceramicist & painter respectively. Away from their practice, the couple can just as happily be found at popular Freo haunts, or the confines of their art-laden Hamilton Hill cottage.
Melbourne: Amy Henderson
As the founder of an agency devoted to multidisciplinary creatives, Amy Henderson evidently has a penchant for the world of art. It’s a passion which not only weaves its way through her work life, but that of her home too, a warehouse apartment in Richmond overflowing in wonders. The Melbourne-based founder of The ARTL—NE (and the adjoining digital publication The ART—CLE) has called this space home for the past two decades, slowly layering it with new creations from talented friends and colleagues in that time.
Castlemaine: Clementine Day
Castlemaine, Djaara Country, in the Goldfields region of Victoria is where Clementine Day and her partner struck their own gold: a 1950s home perched atop a hill, just ten minutes from town. Just like her hugely successful food project, Some Things I Like To Cook, Clem’s home has benefited from her patience & skill, slowly tending to its dated fixtures all while inhabiting the space, no easy task! Within these well-loved walls we speak with the self-published author & multi-disciplinary maker about her appreciation of craft and the notion of ‘self-taught’, plus we're treated to her homemade granola recipe - a decidedly thrifty & wholesome dish that’s become one of her mainstays.
Lorne: Georgina Jeffries
This story makes the case for a sea change as we visit interior designer Georgina Jeffries in Lorne, a surf outpost on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road. Here, the former Melbourne resident lives life at a slower pace with daughter, Dusty and partner, Troy in a thoughtfully renovated weatherboard cottage. Her signature approach, designing with an emotive and honest connection to how people live, can be seen throughout this family home; from Dusty’s artwork to Troy’s landscaping — everyone has left their imprint on this warm and welcoming space.
Noosa: Chloe Tozer
Few have honed their interior eye quite like Chloe Tozer, translating a love of travel into boutique & design atelier: CLO Studios. The Peregian Beach sanctuary she shares with fiancé, Jack benefits deeply from this multi-disciplinary offering; a lesson in the ‘dance’ (as Chloe puts it) of colour, texture, lighting, collectables & art. That said, what's outside her home is just as important, named ‘Villa des Fleurs’ meaning ‘house of flowers’ for the lush gardens that frame this creative haven, touched by influences of the French Riviera & Italian countryside.
Sarajevo:
The artist and writer couple’s apartment, with its high ceilings, herringbone parquetry and French doors has, in time, become layered with their own additions; a heaving built-in bookshelf and a collection of vintage finds that have assimilated with its original beauty. Though it wasn’t always this way. We discover the hurdles the duo faced to get here and learn about their myriad creative pursuits — all while taking in a slice of Sarajevo life.
New York: Julia Eshaghpour & Kevin Hollidge
Living in a New York loft is something most of us can only dream of. Sharing the building with a couple who’ve been there since the 70’s only fuels the fantasy. This is where we're fortunate enough to find Julia Eshaghpour and Kevin Hollidge, on the lively border of Chinatown and the Lower East Side in Manhattan. The pair share their home, multidisciplinary art & design practice Sunfish, and two cats, Quique and Lalo.
